As we settle into 2017, I am honored and humbled to fill the interim role of senior vice president for the University of Arizona Health Sciences.
In the summer of 2014, I returned to the UA to lead the Department of Surgery in the College of Medicine – Tucson. I came back to a vastly different university than when I left after completing my residency. My goal was to spend the next several years building the most innovative department of surgery and elevating our stature as one of the premier academic medical institutions in the country.
In this new role, I have the opportunity to carry forward the remarkable vision that has been established, which has truly transformed the UA Health Sciences. The work we have already done to improve the lives of our state’s residents is astounding. I am proud to work with all of you to carry on and advance our legacy to ensure equal access to educational opportunities and foster excellence in research and teaching.
We will continue on our mission to achieve these ambitious goals.
There is still so much to do. We will continue to make great strides in our important work on strategic and academic goals. We will celebrate milestone anniversaries in our health sciences colleges and centers. We will continue to build a strong partnership with our clinical partner, Banner Health. And, most importantly, we will continue a campaign for better health in our state.
My hope is that we will accomplish all of this with a genuine collaborative spirit, where the perspectives of passionate faculty, staff, students and the community are part of a shared vision.
Working together, there is nothing we can’t do.
