I am writing to follow-up on my March 17th communication announcing the departure of Dean Stuart D. Flynn, MD. Dean Flynn’s last day of service to the University will be April 15, 2016. I want to again express my appreciation to Stuart for his leadership and commitment to building an outstanding new medical school – the UA College of Medicine – Phoenix.
I recently met with the members of the College’s leadership team to solicit their input, and will soon announce the formation of the committee that will lead the national search for our next Dean. In the interim, I am pleased to announce the appointment of Kenneth S. Ramos, MD, PhD, as Interim Dean of the College of Medicine – Phoenix, effective April 18, 2016.
Many of you have come to know Dr. Ramos from his role as UAHS Associate Vice President for Precision Health Sciences and Director of the Center for Applied Genetics and Genomic Medicine. He also has served as Director of the College of Medicine – Tucson MD/PhD program and was co-Principal Investigator (together with Dr. Charles Cairns and me) of the UAHS Clinical and Translational Sciences Award (CTSA) application last January. Dr. Ramos has recently served as a member of the search committee for the College of Medicine – Phoenix Department of Medicine Chair position.
Dr. Ramos possesses all of the qualities essential for serving in this important interim leadership capacity. He is an academician of the highest caliber, having been elected to the National Academy of Medicine this past October. He has a depth of experience across the tripartite mission areas of education, research and clinical service, is a thoughtful listener, and a consensus builder. Dr. Ramos has a keen understanding of the history and ongoing development of the College and UAHS programs on the Phoenix Biomedical Campus. I believe you will find him to be fully engaged in the day-to-day operations of the College.
I am grateful to Dr. Ramos for his enthusiastic willingness to serve in this important leadership role and support the smooth transition to the next permanent Dean of the College of Medicine – Phoenix. Please join me in welcoming Dr. Ramos into this interim role.
Thank you for your positive engagement and continued support. I look forward to providing additional updates and to the continued strong growth trajectory of the College.
Joe G.N. “Skip” Garcia, MD
