Announcing the Recipients of the New Primary Care Physician Scholarship Program

Jan. 29, 2020

Following extensive committee reviews of student applications from both of our Colleges of Medicine, I am pleased to announce the 29 inaugural recipients of our new Primary Care Physician Scholarship.

This innovative program, developed in partnership with and funded by the State of Arizona, is part of our commitment to remove financial and geographical barriers to education and health care access. Student recipients receive up to four years of free tuition for committing to serve up to four years as a primary care physician in an underserved area of the state.

Eight students are from the College of Medicine – Phoenix (two each among first-year students, second-year students, third-year students and fourth-year students) and 21 students are from the College of Medicine – Tucson (three first-year students, eight second-year students, seven third-year students and three fourth-year students).

Following their residencies, these exceptional individuals will bring their unique experiences and perspectives to providing culturally sensitive care to Arizona’s diverse populations. Learn more about each of these trailblazing students in our digital photo gallery.

To recognize our scholarship recipients and acknowledge their commitment to Arizona’s diverse and underserved communities, we are holding a reception in Phoenix this afternoon and in Tucson on Friday. Elected officials and the media have been invited to hear the stories of these remarkable students and learn about the powerful potential of this bold program, which will begin to significantly address the severe statewide primary care physician shortage and the growing burden of student debt.

We are honored to begin sending our graduates to parts of the state where they’re most needed. Please join me in congratulating these outstanding future physicians.
